Report: Rays official denies Rodney contract talks

The Rays and closer Fernando Rodney are close to finishing a new two-year contract extension. Rodney told the Dominican newpaper El Dia that he's just waiting for the call from his agent.

"Everything is ready," he said. "Today I'll know the scope of the contract extension with Tampa Bay, which will be for two years even though we've been looking for it to be for three years"

Rodney, 35, set a big-league record with a 0.60 ERA in 74 2/3 innings last season. He struck out 76 batters and walked just 15 while going 48-for-50 in save chances, his first season with the Rays. The team exercised his $2.5-million option after the season, so a new two-year deal will keep him with the team through 2015. Rodney earned just $1.75 million in 2012.

Update: Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times spoke to a Rays official who said the two sides have not even discussed a new contract. Sounds like someone doesn't have the whole story.
