Red Sox manager John Farrell expects David Ortiz to be ready for opening day, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. The Sox's 37-year-old star DH missed more than 70 games last season because of an Achilles' injury.

"He's still going through some agility work and some rehab with the Achilles," Farrell told Abraham. "That's one of the areas that the workload and the volume of it will be monitored. ... How we get [to Opening Day], that might take some initial adjustment along the way."

When healthy, Ortiz can still hit, as his 2012 slash line of .318/.415/.611 (171 OPS+) proves. However, if the Red Sox are going to contend in the tough AL East, they'll need Ortiz to add substantially to the 383 plate appearances he managed last season.
