Rolen won't be in camp with Reds, stops short of saying he's retiring

Long-time big-leaguer Scott Rolen wants to play in 2013, but it won't be with the Reds. The team announced in a joint statement that Rolen will not be in camp with them this spring. Rolen stopped short of announcing his retirement.

“Right now I'm simply not ready to make a commitment," he said. "I would like to leave my options open, without closing any doors. I am looking forward to all of the challenges, both personally and professionally, I will face in the future.”

Rolen, 37, hit .245/.318/.398 with eight homers in 330 plate appearances for Cincinnati last season while battling lower-back and shoulder issues. Reds GM Walt Jocketty said Rolen “made significant contributions to our team's recent success, and it isn't a coincidence we made the playoffs in two of his three full seasons here," while also praising his leadership and impact in the community.

The Reds will go into next season with Todd Frazier at third base after he hit .273/.331/.498 with 19 homers in 465 plate appearances a year ago. That performance earned him a third-place finish in the NL Rookie of the Year voting. Utility man Jack Hannahan provides a capable alternative. It's been speculated that the Dodgers could have interest in Rolen.
