Daisuke Matsuzaka looking forward to facing Red Sox

By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer

Daisuke Matsuzaka spent six years pitching for the Red Sox, experiencing some ups (2007 World Series, 18-3 in 2008) and a lot of downs (Tommy John surgery, 5.53 ERA from 2009-12). He signed a minor league contract with the Indians this winter, which reunited him with manager Terry Francona. Turns out, that wasn't the only reason Matsuzaka signed with Cleveland.

Given Dice-K's performance over the last four years, I'm guessing the Red Sox want him to pitch against them as well. The Indians and Red Sox will only play two series in 2013: April 16-18 in Cleveland and May 23-26 in Boston.

Matsuzaka, 32, will have to make the Indians first; he's competing with the likes of Trevor Bauer and Scott Kazmir for the final spot in the Tribe's rotation. He pitched to an 8.28 ERA in 11 starts for the Red Sox last summer after returning from the elbow reconstruction.
