Bad news from Oakland Athletics camp, as closer Grant Balfour has been diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his right knee and will miss the next four to six weeks.

MLB.com's Jane Lee reports that Balfour felt discomfort in the knee at the end of last season and that a recent MRI revealed the extent of the injury. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets that Balfour will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Thursday. Even though the injury is to Balfour's "drive leg," he still may be available for opening day.

The 35-year-old Balfour is coming off three straight seasons in which he's worked at least 55 1/3 innings to go with a sub-3.00 ERA. In 2012, he boasted a WHIP of 0.94.
