MLB mandates use of new, stronger batting helmets in 2013

By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer
Safer helmets are now mandatory. (USATSI)

Major League Baseball has mandated new, stronger batting helmets for all players starting with the first spring training games this weekend. The implementation of the new helmets was part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement signed last winter.

The Rawlings S100 Pro Comp helmet is the standard for the new helmets. It's that goofy-looking Great Gazoo helmet you see above, which players like David Wright and Francisco Cervelli wore following concussions in recent years. Rawlings has a new, slimmed-down version that is equally safe but not as funny looking, thankfully. You can read more about the new lids in this piece by Ken Belson of the New York Times.
