The start of spring training was not kind to Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis, as he'll miss the next six weeks or so after breaking his collarbone Saturday. The injury occurred on a foul tip.

Mathis had been slated for backup duty and to be the platoon partner to primary catcher Rob Brantly. As Juan C. Rodriguez notes, Kyle Skipworth or Jake Jefferies will likely function as the second catcher, at least for the time being.

The 29-year-old Mathis is a career .198/.256/.314 hitter across parts of eight major-league seasons.
