Curtis Granderson out 10 weeks with fractured right forearm

Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson will miss 10 weeks with a fractured right forearm, the team announced. He was hit by a pitch in his first Grapefruit League at-bat Sunday afternoon.

I suppose the good news for New York -- if there is any -- is that the injury happened so early in spring training. The 10-week estimate means Granderson should be able to return to the lineup in early-to-mid May if everything heals properly and he has no setbacks. That said, he will miss all of spring training and still needs to prepare himself for the season.

Granderson, 31, hit .232/.319/.492 with 43 home runs last season, the second most in baseball behind Miguel Cabrera. The Yankees lost quite a bit of thump this offseason as Nick Swisher, Russell Martin, Raul Ibanez and Eric Chavez all signed elsewhere, so Granderson's power will be sorely missed in the lineup.

The Yankees don't have great outfield depth. Brett Gardner will take over in center -- he was slated to take over the position and push Granderson to left anyway -- with Ichiro Suzuki in right, though neither guy will be confused for a power hitter. Veterans Matt Diaz and Juan Rivera are in camp as non-roster players competing for a bench spot, but both could make the squad now. Former Yankee Alfonso Soriano could be a trade candidate, or the Yankees could go internal with prospects Melky Mesa and Zoilo Almonte.
