McCann takes batting practice for first time since shoulder surgery

Braves catcher Brian McCann took batting practice on Thursday for the first time since having right shoulder surgery in October, reports MLB.com's Mark Bowman. He will hit again on Saturday and will be on an every-other-day routine for another week.

"It was nice to get back in there and see something coming at you," McCann said. "I'm on pace. Everything they have asked me to do, I've done."

McCann, 29, was hampered by shoulder problems last year and hit just .230/.300/.399 with 20 homers. He'd produced a .281/.362/.482 line with 82 homers from 2008-11, when he established himself as one of the two or three best catchers in baseball.

McCann will earn $12 million this year and is scheduled to become a free agent next offseason. A full, healthy year of his typical production should bring a sizeable free-agent contract given the dearth of quality catchers.
