Diamondbacks right-hander David Hernandez has replaced Indians closer Chris Perez on Team USA for the World Baseball Classic, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Perez has been sidelined for 3-4 weeks with a sore shoulder.
Hernandez, 27, has pitched to a 2.94 ERA with 175 strikeouts in 137 2/3 innings for Arizona over the last two seasons. The Diamondbacks acquired him from the Orioles as part of the Mark Reynolds trade, and he has since settled in as J.J. Putz's primary setup man.
Hernandez will join Diamondbacks bullpen-mate Heath Bell in the Team USA bullpen.
