World Baseball Classic update: Brazil on the brink

Scores from World Baseball Classic action on Sunday in Asia: Cuba 5, Brazil 2; Japan 5, China 2; and Chinese Taipei 8, Netherlands 3. Those results leave Brazil at 0-2 in the main tournament and on the brink of elimination.

"I was very impressed with the pitching," Brazil manager (and Hall of Famer) Barry Larkin told MLB.com of Cuba. "[I] certainly knew the players were going to be aggressive -- good defensive ballclub, free-spirited ballclub. When you come to play against Cuba, you're going to have to come and bring your best. That's what I expected, and that's exactly what I saw today."

Since just the top two teams from each four-team, round-robin pool advance to the second round, Brazil's 0-2 record all but ensures elimination. Cuba is 1-0 and on Wednesday will face fellow powerhouse Japan (2-0).

Monday's slate includes China (0-1) against Cuba and South Korea (0-1) against Australia (0-1) in what is in essence an elimination game. Later on Tuesday (11:30 pm ET), Australia will take on the Netherlands (1-1).
