Diamondbacks renew Wade Miley's contract for $500,500

Angels outfielder Mike Trout now has some company when it comes to being grossly underpaid in 2013. CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reports the Diamondbacks have locked up Wade Miley for 2013 at a salary of $500,500, which is just barely north of the major-league mininum mark of $490,000.

Last season, Miley made the NL All-Star team and finished second in the Rookie of the Year balloting by posting an ERA+ of 125 in 194 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old lefty has just more than one year of major-league service time.

The D-Backs are, of course, well within their rights to take this tack with a pre-arbitration player (pre-arb salaries bear utterly no relationship to the market). However, giving a quality performer such a paltry raise (Miley made a prorated $481,000 last season) can create some unnecessary ill will between player and team. And that can be a factor should the subject of a long-term deal come up at a future date.
