Report: Nolan Ryan could soon leave Rangers

Sources tell Randy Galloway of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan could soon part ways with the organization, perhaps before the end of spring training. A recent restructuring of the front office is viewed as a sign of Ryan's decaying power. Galloway writes:

The ownership announced that (Jon) Daniels was promoted to president of baseball operations/GM, and that (Rick) George in the front office was promoted to president of business operations. While the announcement was made over the weekend, I'm hearing the moves were actually made in late November.

Ryan's title with the team remains as CEO. But sources also say Daniels now has final say over all baseball decisions and George the final say over business decisions.

Rangers co-owner Bob Simpson vigorously denied to Galloway that Ryan has in any way been defrocked or is being marginalized.

Ryan has three years remaining on his contract with the Rangers, but if he has been forced to cede power to Daniels, then it's not hard to imagine a man of Ryan's pride (ego) walking away or forcing a more drastic decision on the part of ownership.

Of course, when it's a figure as popular as Ryan is in Texas, there's no such thing as a bloodless coup, if indeed that's what's going on.
