Scores from World Baseball Classic action on Monday in Asia: Cuba 12, China 0; and Korea 6, Australia 0. Cuba joins Japan (both 2-0) in the second round of the tournament.
"Our lineup is getting loose and our condition is getting better every day," Cuba manager Victor Mesa told MLB.com. "Our aim is to clinch the pool, so we are pleased to win the first two games ... That's the reason we flew from Cuba to Japan."
The top two teams from each four-team, round-robin pool advance to the second round, meaning Brazil and China (both 0-2) have already been eliminated from Pool A. Australia (0-2) is all but assured of elimination from Pool B. Powerhouses Cuba and Japan will meet on Wednesday.
Tuesday's slate includes Australia against the Netherlands (1-1), Korea against Chinese Taipei, and Brazil against China. Wins by the Netherlands and Korea would create a three-team tie atop Pool B. The tiebreaking scenario involves head-to-head record and a formula based on a number of factors, including runs scored and allowed.
