Stan Musial reached out to Strasburg following elbow injury in 2010

The Nationals were playing the Cardinals in 2010 when Stephen Strasburg blew out his elbow and needed Tommy John surgery. St. Louis veterans Albert Pujols and Chris Carpenter sought out the right-hander following the injury, but they weren't the only Cardinals icons to do so, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

“As soon as I got home from surgery I had a video message waiting from Stan Musial,” Strasburg said Sunday.

“It was a brief message about how big a fan he was. He said he knew in his heart that I was going to be even better and stronger. I was down in the dumps. I had never met him before and he reached out to me, gave me a lot of confidence.”

Strasburg, 24, sent Musial a signed jersey "for [his] grandkids" and received a personalized jersey in return. Goold says Bryce Harper also has his own Musial moment, as the Hall of Famer requested a signed jersey last summer. Harper agreed and received a personalized jersey in return.

Musial, who died at age 92 in January, was well known for being pleasant and generous off the field in addition to being one of the greatest players in baseball history.
