White Sox, Chris Sale talking contract extension

Lefty Chris Sale and the White Sox are discussing a contract extension, Sale confirmed to Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago. "We've been kind of back and forth but nothing too crazy right now," Sale said Tuesday.

As Hayes notes, Sale, should he spend the entirety of the 2013 season in the majors, will be eligible for salary arbitration next winter. That's a service-time juncture that lends itself to long-term talks.

Sale, age 23, is coming off a season -- his first as a starter in the majors -- in which he posted an ERA of 3.05 and struck out a batter per inning across 192 frames. For his career, Sale owns a stellar ERA+ of 150.

Given Sale's performance to date, age, service time and successful transition to starter, the discussion likely starts with a four- or five-year deal. The five-year, $42-million extension signed by Washington's Gio Gonzalez last winter probably isn't a bad model for negotations. From the White Sox's standpoint, Sale is certainly a talent worth keeping in the fold.
