Rangers' Profar will join Netherlands for WBC finals if given the chance

Last month, baseball's top prospect Jurickson Profar decided to skip the World Baseball Classic and instead focus on making the Rangers with a strong camp. Now that the Netherlands has advanced to the semifinals with its walk-off win over Cuba, he might have a chance to do both. From Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News:

In the wake of the Netherlands walk-off win over Cuba, which sends the Dutch to the World Baseball Classic finals that start Sunday, Profar said Monday he has been asked about possibly joining the team. And, he said, he'd like to go.

“If they give me a chance, I will go,” Profar said, smiling widely. “They are doing a really great job.”

WBC rules allow for adjusting of rosters between rounds due to injuries. Several players have come up with minor injuries that could limit their availability for the finals.

GM Jon Daniels told Grant he will encourage the 20-year-old Profar to participate in the WBC if given the chance. Since the championship round runs from March 17-19, he'd only miss about a week of camp.

Profar has gone 7 for 33 (.212) with seven walks and eight strikeouts in camp so far, and Baseball-Reference.com's OppoQual stat indicates he's faced mostly big-league-caliber pitching. Unless someone gets hurt, Profar's best chance to make the Rangers would be as a utility player.
