Zack Greinke diagnosed with inflammation in elbow, out 2-3 days

The Dodgers have released an update on their $147 million right-hander:

Zack Greinke was examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles today. Dr. ElAttrache confirmed the diagnosis of inflammation in the back of the right elbow. An MRI performed in Arizona last week showed there was no structural damage to the ligaments or tendons of the elbow. He received an injection of PRP and anti-inflammatory medication. He will rest for 2-3 days and then return to a progressive throwing program.

PRP is platelet-rich plasma, which is taken from the patient's blood and injected into the affected area in a concentrated dose to promote healing. It's become relatively common for injuries such as this.

Greinke, 29, was scratched from Monday's scheduled start and sent for tests because of nagging elbow soreness. He has had elbow issues in the past, but the good news is that there is no structural damage. The team was obviously concerned enough to send him for tests, but the injury is minor enough that only a few days of rest are required.

The Dodgers signed Greinke to a seven-year contract this past offseason. He went 15-5 with a 3.48 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 200 strikeouts in 212 1/3 innings last season for the Brewers and Angels, though he has managed only two Cactus League starts in camp.
