2017 World Baseball Classic: Bryce Harper is in

Here's what Nationals outfielder/phenom Bryce Harper says to FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal on the subject of playing for Team USA in the 2017 World Baseball Classic:

"In four years, absolutely I want to play, 100 percent," Harper said Monday. "They can write my name down right now.

"I'm all for USA. I'm all for playing in the WBC and the Olympics, whatever. This year was just hard."

Harper begged off this time around so as to better familiarize himself with his new full-time position in left field, which is certainly reasonable. Still, there's no doubt the U.S. would benefit from a player of Harper's skills, just as there's no doubt the WBC would benefit from a player of Harper's prominence.

If Harper's legendary age-19 rookie season is any guide, by 2017 he'll be a board-certified superduperstar and quite possibly the best player in baseball. There's plenty of time for things to change, and his health will surely inform the decision once the time comes. Still, it's encouraging that Harper sounds devoted to the cause, even if we're still four years out.
