Padres right-hander Casey Kelly is heading for tests on his sore right elbow, reports's Corey Brock. Peter Gammons hinted that Tommy John surgery may be necessary.

The 23-year-old Kelly hadn't appeared in a Cactus League game since March 7th. He made his big league debut last season after being acquired from the Red Sox as part of the Adrian Gonzalez trade, going 2-3 with a 6.21 ERA in six starts. He struck out 26 and walked ten in 29 innings.

Kelly was one of several pitchers competing for a rotation spot this spring, but he'll instead join an already long list of injured young Padres' hurlers. Right-hander Joe Wieland and left-hander Corey Luebke are both rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, and right-hander Andrew Cashner missed time after a hunting accident.

Baseball America recently ranked Kelly as the 45th best prospect in baseball overall. Not that it matters now, but he was my early pick for 2013 NL Rookie of the Year.
