Chase Headley to see thumb specialist, opening day 'in doubt'

After he initially left Sunday's game, word from Padres camp was that third baseman Chase Headley had a jammed thumb and was simply day-to-day. However, the news got worse.

Headley is set to see a specialist to have X-rays and other tests -- and his status for opening day is now "in doubt," according to multiple reporters, including Corey Brock of

"He went to slide into second base and got stuck and twisted around and his thumb ended up hitting the bag ... his thumb was in a bad spot," manager Bud Black said (

Headley jammed his left thumb while sliding into the second to break up a double play. He eventually went to grab the bag with his left hand and awkwardly caught his thumb on the bag.

Headley, 28, is the anchor of the Padres offense. He hit .286/.376/.498 with 31 homers, 31 doubles, 95 runs, 17 stolen bases and an NL-best 116 RBI last season. He finished in fifth place in NL MVP voting.

So it goes without saying that starting the season without Headley would be a big blow for the Padres.
