Mind-boggling stat: World Baseball Classic ratings in Puerto Rico

By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer

A lot of people tuned in to see Puerto Rico eliminate Japan. (USATSI)

Puerto Rico defeated two-time defending champion Japan on Sunday night for a berth in the World Baseball Classic championship game, and a whole lot of people in Puerto Rico watched it happen:

I'm not a guy who knows a lot about television ratings, but that strikes me as outrageously good. There are 3.6 million people in Puerto Rico. And while that doesn't mean there are 3.6 million televisions, we're not talking about a small place here. When three of every four televisions in use in a given country (or commonwealth!) are tuned in to the end of a baseball game in mid-March, the WBC is working. More and more people are falling in love with baseball, and that is a wonderful thing.
