Diamondbacks trade John McDonald to Pirates

The Arizona Diamondbacks have traded infielder John McDonald to the Pirates, according to a Pirates press release. In return the Diamondbacks will get either a player to be named later or cash considerations.

McDonald, 38, brings very little to the table with the bat. He hit .249/.295/.386 with six homers and 22 RBI in 213 plate appearances last season for Arizona.

His value, however, stems almost entirely from his glove work. He can play second base, third base or shortstop well. He made only one error in 210 chances last season. His range -- according to advanced metrics like range factor, dWAR and UZR -- is outstanding.

Expect the Pirates to stick with Clint Barmes at shortstop and use McDonald as an occasional starter along with a late-inning defensive replacement in the infield.
