Mets' Shaun Marcum out after receiving cortisone shot in shoulder

By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer

Shaun Marcum's arm woes continue. (USATSI)

The Mets already figure to be without left-hander Johan Santana when the season starts, and now it looks like they'll be down a second starting pitcher as well:

Marcum, 31, is back in New York and the Mets say he will take it easy the next few days. The veteran right-hander signed a one-year deal worth $4 million this winter, though he battled shoulder inflammation last March and elbow problems during the summer. Marcum went 7-4 with a 3.70 ERA for the Brewers last season and was shut down earlier in camp in an effort to build arm strength.

Assuming Santana and Marcum will miss the start of the season, the Mets will have to find two starters to join Jonathon Niese, Dillon Gee and Matt Harvey in the rotation. Right-hander Jeremy Hefner has the inside track for one spot while the other could go to lefty Aaron Laffey or top prospect Zack Wheeler. It's very unlikely the Mets would reach out to free agent Kyle Lohse to address their rotation woes.
