Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie, who's battling a strained ribcage muscle, will open regular season on the DL, reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman.

Lawrie initially suffered the injury early this month, and as a consequence he was removed from Canada's World Baseball Classic roster. Last week, Lawrie had been able to field ground balls and take swings, but manager John Gibbons said he'd need to see game action over the weekend. Lawrie did not, and now, as Heyman reports, he's headed for the DL.

The 23-year-old Lawrie is regarded as a defensive asset at the hot corner, and he also owns a major-league batting line of .278/.336/.446 across parts of two seasons. While Lawrie is out, Mark DeRosa is expected to fill in at third for Toronto.
