Giants extend GM Brian Sabean, manager Bruce Bochy through 2016

It's not much of a secret that the San Francisco Giants prefer stability, and on Thursday night they secured a whole lot of it. GM Brian Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy have signed contract extensions through the 2016 season with options for 2017, the team announced.

Sabean, 56, is the longest-tenured general manager in baseball. He took over the Giants in September 1996 and has led the club to two World Series titles in the last three years. Under his watch the team has developed cornerstone players like Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner, Buster Posey and two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum.

Bochy, 57, was hired by San Francisco in October 2006. The Giants have gone 503-469 under his watch, winning two NL West division titles and the two World Championship. Bochy was hired away from the division-rival Padres, who he managed from 1995-2006.

Sabean and the Giants have signed both Cain and Bumgarner to multiyear contracts in the last calendar year. CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman says the team has quietly started negotiating a long-term mega-contract with Posey as well. San Francisco has its player core locked up, and now their leadership group is locked up as well.
