Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson confirmed Cody Ross will open the season on the DL, reports MLB.com's Steve Gilbert. The outfielder has been bothered by a calf problem in camp.

Ross, 32, signed a three-year contract worth $26 million with Arizona this past offseason after hitting .267/.326/.481 (113 OPS+) with 22 homers in 130 games for the Red Sox in 2012. He played only four games in spring training before the injury, going hitless in seven at-bats.

Rookie center fielder Adam Eaton will miss 6-8 weeks with an elbow issue, though Gerardo Parra will step right into position on an everyday basis. With Jason Kubel set to play left, right field figures to go to Tony Campana or prospect A.J. Pollock. Eric Hinske could also be an option.

The D-Backs traded two starting outfielders this winter, sending Chris Young to the Athletics and Justin Upton to the Braves.
