Rays outfielder/DH Luke Scott will open the season on the DL with a right calf strain, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. He received a cortisone shot and hopes to be activated when eligible on April 8.

Scott, 34, battled nagging muscle injuries all last season, including hamstring, back and oblique problems. He hit .229/.285/.439 (101 OPS+) with 14 homers in 96 games for Tampa Bay before signing a new one-year, $2.75-million contract during the offseason.

The Rays won't announce Scott's replacement until Sunday, but they could use 40-man roster players Ryan Roberts or Brandon Guyer. Shelley Duncan is a non-40-man option, though he's a right-handed hitter while Scott swings from the left side.
