Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts has been placed on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain, the Orioles announced Friday afternoon. As a corresponding move, infielder Yamaico Navarro has been recalled from the minors.

Roberts actually has a ruptured semi-tendonsis ligament behind his right knee, according to Orioles' beat reporters (including Britt Ghiroli of MLB.com). Any ruptured ligament sounds bad, but Ghiroli notes this is a ligament commonly removed to help repair torn ACLs -- that is, it takes the place of the torn ACL -- in surgery, so it's relatively non-essential.

Reports have Roberts missing three to four weeks.

Roberts, 35, has had unbelievably bad luck with injuries the past several years. From 2007-09, he averaged 157 games played and over 700 plate appearances per season. Since then, however, he's only appeared in 118 total games due to various maladies.

Even worse this time around is that Roberts was off to a hot start at the plate, hitting .417 with a double, RBI, run and stolen base in 12 at-bats.

Navarro, 25, has hit .191/.244/.250 in 168 career major-league plate appearances. He had a good spring (.276/.417/.379) for the Orioles, though.

Expect Ryan Flaherty to get the majority of the time at second base with Roberts out.
