Angels closer Ryan Madson continues to work his way back from last season's Tommy John surgery, and he took a big step forward Thursday afternoon.

Madson threw a bullpen session after only one day off for the first time, reports Jeff Fletcher of the OC Register. Fletcher also notes that Madson threw 35 pitches at 100 percent effort.

In terms of how a closer would be used in game situations, Madson is only back-to-back days in throwing away from being ready.

Thus far this season, the 2-6 Angels have seen their bullpen post a 4.88 ERA and 1.23 WHIP, though that's far from their only concern.

Still, having a healthy Madson at the back of the bullpen would obviously be a big plus for the ballclub.

Madson, 32, successfully converted 32 of 34 save chances with a 2.37 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 62 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings in 2011 for the Phillies. He signed a one-year deal with the Reds prior to the 2012 season, but tore his ulnar collateral ligament and had to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.

This past offseason, the Angels signed Madson to a one-year, $3.25 million deal.
