Giambi, 42, interviewed for the Rockies' managerial job this offseason before the club hired Walt Weiss. I don't know if anyone else has ever resumed their playing career after interviewing for a manager's job, but I can't imagine many people have done it. Most guys aren't considered a managerial candidate until well after their playing days are over.
Since joining Colorado midway through the 2009 season, Giambi has hit .248/.375/.452 with 22 homers in 230 games as a part-time first baseman and pinch-hitting specialist. The left-handed hitter figures to get DH at-bats against righties with Mark Reynolds shifting to first and Nick Swisher moving into the outfield.
