Blue Jays GM says best case for Jose Reyes is 'probably a month'

Following his team's win over the Royals on Friday, Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos told Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star the best-case scenario for Jose Reyes is "probably a month" on the DL with his left ankle sprain. The worst-case scenario is closer to three months, and the team will know more on Saturday.

Reyes, 29, left Friday's game after sliding awkwardly into second on a stolen-base attempt. He stayed on the ground for several minutes and was in obvious pain before being carted off the field.

Anthopoulos confirmed to Kennedy that he has already had trade discussions with other teams about shortstop help following the injury. He wouldn't name any names, obviously, but he did say he had "someone in mind" to call about an immediate replacement.

Shortstop is a tough position to fill, and not many clubs can afford to trade away depth at the position. Tommy Manzella (Rockies), Ryan Jackson (Cardinals) or former Blue Jays John McDonald (Pirates) could make sense as a short-term trade solution. McDonald is in the big leagues while the other two are in Triple-A. It seems unlikely they would explore a blockbuster for Jurickson Profar of the Rangers, but we know Anthopoulos isn't afraid to make a big splash.

The Blue Jays could use Mark DeRosa at third base and shift Maicer Izturis to shortstop for the time being. Veteran Munenori Kawasaki is in Triple-A and could come up to fill out the bench. He spent last year with the Mariners.

Reyes was off to a scorching hot start to the season, going 15-for-38 (.395) with more walks (five) than strikeouts (four) and a league-leading five steals in 10 games.
