After Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes injured his left ankle against the Royals on Friday night, the team was initially hoping that he would miss just a month. On Saturday, however, the worst-case scenario became the reality. Here's John Lott of Canada's National Post:

So the Jays will be without their shortstop and leadoff hitter for what amounts to roughly half the regular season. It goes without saying that this is a severe blow to a team with legitimate designs on the playoffs.

Here's the play that did Reyes in:

Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos will now sift through the trade market for help at the position. Obviously, whatever he digs up is going to constitute a healthy drop-off from Reyes. As MLB Trade Rumors notes, potential targets include Cody Ransom, Josh Wilson, Mike Aviles, John McDonald, Yuniesky Betancourt, Jonathan Herrera, Ramiro Pena, Cesar Izturis and Dee Gordon.

For the time being, Maicer Izturis (career OPS+ of 93; 1,526 career defensive innings at SS) will hold down Reyes's position. Frankly, he's probably a better fill-in than any of the names you see listed above.

As for Reyes, the 29-year-old owns a career OPS+ of 108 to go with 415 steals and 111 triples. Reyes was off to a hot start in his first season in Toronto: .395/.465/.526 with a majors-leading five thefts.
