When news broke Sunday that Indians center fielder Michael Bourn had received five stitches to repair a laceration on his right index finger, the Indians listed his status as day to day. It appears his status has changed as manager Terry Francona told reporters (Jordan Bastian, for one) Tuesday that Bourn will be placed on the 15-day disabled list in the next couple of days.

The Indians want to wait to make a corresponding move with lefty Scott Kazmir who is rehabbing in Triple-A Columbus. Kazmir, who pitched five innings in a rehab game on Monday, could take Bourn's spot on the roster.

The Indians did recall Cord Phelps from Columbus on Tuesday and sent down catcher Omir Santos.

Bourn injured his finger on a play Sunday against the White Sox when he dove into first base and Chicago reliever Matt Thornton accidentally stepped on his hand.

This is a big blow to the Indians, because Bourn was already providing excellent defense in center field, not to mention hitting .333/.375/.600 with four doubles, a triple and two homers atop the lineup.

While a finger injury might sound insigificant to some, it makes sense that a DL stint is needed. Considering the violent motion that is a swing, the wound would never close if Bourn tried to play through the injury. The best move is to get it completely healed and move foward with no lingering issue.

With Bourn out, the Indians can play Drew Stubbs in center and Nick Swisher in right field, allowing them to use either Mark Reynolds or Jason Giambi at first base.
