The Padres have activated third baseman Chase Headley off the disabled list, reports's Corey Brock. The switch-hitter is in Wednesday's lineup.

Headley, 28, opened the season on the DL due to a fracture in his left thumb. The team's fill-in third basemen hit just .216/.293/.275 during his 14-game absence. Top prospect Jedd Gyorko started nine games at the hot corner and is 12-for-50 (.240), so he isn't to blame.

Last season, Headley finished fifth in the NL MVP voting after hitting .286/.376/.498 with 31 homers and a league-leading 115 RBI. He'll assume his usual third spot in the lineup.

To make room on the roster for Headley, center fielder Cameron Maybin was placed on the DL according to Brock. Maybin has been bothered by a right wrist issue.
