Mets right-hander Shaun Marcum threw four no-hit innings in an extended spring training start on Thursday as he works his way back from a neck issue, reports Marc Carig of Newsday. He threw 41 pitches, struck out five and walked zero.

Marcum, 31, received a cortisone shot in his shoulder during spring training before the neck problem popped up about two weeks ago. He missed time with elbow, shoulder and hip issues while with the Brewers from 2011-12.

The Mets signed Marcum to a one-year deal worth $4 million this winter, so he'll jump right into the rotation whenever he's healthy enough to pitch. Aaron Laffey figures to be the odd man out.

New York is also without Johan Santana, who will miss the season following shoulder surgery.
