Tonight Russell Martin is making his 9th career start at third base and first since 8/20/08 as a member of the Dodgers.— Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 20, 2013
Yes, indeed. Martin, the Pirates' regular catcher, will be manning the hot corner. As noted above, it's been a while since he's done that.
Martin, though, has some positional flexibility. He's spent 79 1/3 defensive innings at third in his major-league career and has even made one appearance at second base (in 2011, with the Yankees). As well, he was for a time slated to be Team Canada's starting shortstop in the recent World Baseball Classic.
When it comes to the bat, though, the 30-year-old Martin is off to a slow start this season, as he has a slash line of .178/.288/.311 with one home run in 52 plate appearances.
