Angels starting pitcher Tommy Hanson has been placed on the team's bereavement list, the club announced Monday. He will miss his next scheduled start, which was going to be Wednesday. As a corresponding move, right-handed reliever David Carpenter has been promoted from Triple-A Salt Lake.
Players on the bereavement list can stay there for three to seven days, so it's possible Hanson can simply be pushed back one day and return to the hill Thursday. The reason for Hanson being placed on the bereavement list was not disclosed.
It would appear that Jerome Williams will get the start Wednesday in Hanson's absence.
Hanson, 26, is 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and eight strikeouts in 17 innings this season.
Carpenter, 25, has a 6.48 ERA and 1.80 WHIP in 8 1/3 innings this season for Salt Lake. He appeared in 28 games for the Angels last season, sporting a 4.76 ERA and 1.49 WHIP with 28 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings.
