Braves right fielder Jason Heyward had to undergo appendectomy surgery Monday night in Denver, the club announced on Twitter. As is the nature with this type of injury, it was completely unexpected.

The Braves provided no further information on Heyward's condition or a timetable for his return, and it's possible they have no idea at this point. We do have two recent examples of quick recoveries that might apply here, however.

In 2011, Matt Holliday had an appendectomy on April 1 and returned to action April 10. In that same season, Adam Dunn had his own appendectomy on April 6 and came back on April 12. So it's possible for a speedy recovery.

Heyward, 23, is hitting .121/.261/.259 with two homers and five RBI so far this season for the 13-5 Braves.

With Heyward out -- as he'll obviously miss at least a few games -- the Braves will likely go with Reed Johnson in right field.
