UPDATE: Niese has a lower right leg contusion and is day-to-day, the team announced. X-rays were negative. The Mets seem to have really dodged a bullet.
Mets left-hander Jon Niese left Tuesday's start after being hit in the right ankle/leg by a comebacker. He was taken out of the game after a talk with the trainer and was able to walk off the field under his own power. Here's the play:
Niese, 26, allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings before exiting with the injury. The team's opening-day starter went 2-1 with a 3.80 ERA in his first four starts of the season. Niese owns a 37-33 record with a 4.05 ERA in parts of six big-league seasons, including a 13-9, 3.40 mark in 2012.
The Mets are already without Johan Santana (shoulder surgery) and Shaun Marcum (neck), plus rotation fill-in Aaron Laffey was lost on waivers to the Blue Jays on Tuesday afternoon. Marcum is tentatively scheduled to rejoin the team this coming weekend.
