The Astros have placed outfielder Justin Maxwell on the 15-day DL with a broken left hand, the team announced. He was hit by a Hisashi Iwakuma pitch with the bases loaded on Tuesday night.
Maxwell, 29, was hitting .237 with a homer and two stolen bases before the injury. He had taken over as Houston's everyday center fielder and number two hitters after breaking out with 18 homers and a 105 OPS+ in 2012. Maxwell actually remained in the game to run the bases after being hit, but he was lifted between innings.
The Astros will call up outfield Robbie Grossman to fill Maxwell's roster spot. The 23-year-old was hitting .317/.456/.333 for the club's Triple-A affiliate in the early going. Houston acquired Grossman from the Pirates in last summer's Wandy Rodriguez trade.
