Cardinals closer Jason Motte will need Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament and will miss the remainder of the 2013 season, the Cardinals announced Friday.

Motte is set to have the procedure on his elbow early next week, possibly Monday, general manager John Mozeliak told reporters Friday (including Derrick Goold).

Last we heard about Motte, he was beginning to throw a baseball into a net and hoped to avoid surgery on what was being called a right elbow strain. But that plan has obviously changed, as Motte reportedly didn't feel comfortable when attempting to throw Friday. And now we won't see Motte in action before 2014.

Motte, 30, successfully closed 42 of 49 save chances last season with a 2.75 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 86 strikeouts in 72 innings.

With Motte on the shelf in the early going this season, the Cardinals had some bullpen woes, specifically with Mitchell Boggs in the closer role. In the past few weeks, however, manager Mike Matheny has found a hot hand in Edward Mujica, who has converted all seven of his save chances and has a 2.25 ERA and 0.75 WHIP in 12 innings.
