Before their series in Cincinnati that starts Monday, the Braves will activate catcher Brian McCann, who's been out since undergoing shoulder surgery last offseason. Manager Fredi Gonzalez tells MLB.com that McCann will be in the lineup Monday night.
In order to make room on the active roster, the Braves will demote infielder Tyler Pastornicky. That means hard-hitting stand-in catcher Evan Gattis (.565 SLG, seven homers) will remain with the team.
The 29-year-old McCann, a six-time All-Star, is coming off a season in which he batted .230/.300/.399 with 20 homers in 121 games. That level of production is well below his usual standards, however, as he owns a career OPS+ of 117.
McCann went 8 for 23 on his minor-league rehab assignment, which he completed on Sunday. "I feel great," he told MLB.com. "I feel like I did before I had my surgery. The ball is coming out great. I'm ready to go and get the season started."
