A day after rookie Shelby Miller crafted a gem against the Rockies, it was the veteran's turn. Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright on Saturday lost a no-hitter with one out in the eighth inning against the Rockies at Busch Stadium. A clean line drive to center by third baseman Nolan Arenado ended Wainwright's bid for history.

Before Todd Helton drew a fifth-inning walk, Miller and Wainwright had combined to retire 40 consecutive Colorado hitters. It had been a span of 50 straight Rockies batters without a hit until Arenado's single. Miller allowed a leadoff single on Friday night, then retired 27 consecutive Colorado batters to record his first major-league complete game.

On Saturday, Wainwright wound up notching a complete-game shutout and was one out from pitching the team's second consecutive one-hitter. The big right-hander struck out seven against one walk. Wainwright also recorded nine ground-ball outs, and 88 of his 120 pitches went for strikes.

The most recent Cardinal pitcher to throw a no-hitter was Bud Smith, on Sept. 3, 2001.
