Ryan Madson has dealt with numerous setbacks during his rehab from Tommy John surgery, but he was finally able to appear in a minor league rehab game on Monday. The Angels' right-hander recorded a save while striking out one in a 1-2-3 inning for the team's High Class-A affiliate.

"I just want to pitch and feel good and get outs," said Madson to's William Boor. "Everything else has always taken care of itself."

Madson, 32, was clocked at 91-92 mph with his fastball during the one-inning appearance, and he told Boor he "can absolutely" get hitters out at that velocity. PitchFX data says he averaged 94.0 mph and topped out at 96.6 mph with his fastball in 2011, the last time he pitched in the big leagues before elbow reconstruction.

The Angels signed Madson to an incentive-laden one-year contract worth $3.5 million guaranteed this offseason. He signed a one-year, $8.5 million deal with the Reds last season, but he blew out his elbow and never pitched for Cincinnati.

Madson was expected to open the year as the Halos' closer before battling elbow soreness in spring training. Right-hander Ernesto Frieri has been 7 for 8 in save chances with a 1.59 ERA in the meantime, allowing the club to ease Madson back into things once healthy.

Boor says the veteran reliever will make another minor league appearance on Wednesday. If that goes well, there's a chance Madson will be activated off the DL this coming weekend.
