Indians win; Indians fans make hot-dog history

The Indians topped the Mariners in extras on Friday night, and in doing so remained in a tie with the Tigers atop the AL Central.

And now for the real news: It was "Dollar Dog Night" at Progressive Field, and, in the spirit of the occasion, Indians fans consumed discount encased meats with the zeal of the newly converted.

First, the setup, courtesy of Michael K. McIntyre of the Cleveland Plain Dealer ...

Nearly 16,000 dogs were sold before the first pitch, according to Chris Angne, general manager of Delaware North Companies. By the middle of the fifth inning an hour and a half later, the number was north of 51,000.

And now the stirring final body count ...

A record! That's 1.16 hot dogs for every resident of Greenland, per CIA estimates! Recommended daily allowance of nitrites and saturated fat? Satisfied!
