The Cardinals will place left-handed starting pitcher Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder pain, general manager John Mozeliak announced Saturday. As a corresponding move, reliever Mitchell Boggs will be recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.

As far as Garcia's status moving forward, all we have for now is this:

Garcia, 26, dealt with shoulder injuries through much of the 2012 season as well. So far this season, he's 5-2 with a 3.58 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 43 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings. In his last two starts -- the latter coming Friday night -- Garcia has allowed 11 earned runs in 11 1/3 innings (8.74 ERA).

The Cardinals won't need a replacement for Garcia until the middle of next week. With Jake Westbrook also on the disabled list, the Cardinals have already inserted John Gast into the rotation. The path may now be clear for Michael Wacha to make his big-league debut.

Wacha, 21, entered the season on most top-100 prospect lists (he was 76th in Baseball America) after being the Cardinals' first-round pick last June. In eight starts for Triple-A Memphis this season, Wacha is 4-0 with a 1.89 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 32 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings. He last started Thursday, so inserting him into Garcia's spot would be a smooth transition.
