Andre Ethier is not hurt. Mattingly said he is sitting because he wants to field team that will compete the best.— Dylan Hernandez (@dylanohernandez) May 22, 2013
I do believe I detect a not-so-subtle jab therein. The Dodgers will be facing Brewers right-hander Wily Peralta, and Scott Van Slyke will be manning right field. The only thing Ethier does well on a baseball diamond is hit right-handed pitching (no, he's not a good fielder, regardless of that Gold Glove -- poor range), and even this year he has a respectable .263/.371/.394 slash line against the opposite side. Then throw in the fact that Ethier is 3-for-7 with a triple, a homer and walk over the first two game of the series.
Don Mattingly's choice of words in tandem with the fact that a righty is starting for the opposition make it sound as though this is more than just a day of rest for Ethier.
On that front, Donnie Baseball had best be careful, lest he find himself on the receiving end of an Andre Ethier Stare of Daggers:
