Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira has been on the shelf throughout the 2013 regular season due to a tendon sheath issue in his wrist, but a return to the diamond looks to be right around the corner.

Teixeira has been ramping up his baseball activities in Tampa (the Yankees' spring home) and will play in an extended spring training game Saturday, reports Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. And there's more:

Trenton is the Yankees' Double-A affiliate. So if all goes well between now and then, Teixeira could well be back in the Yankees lineup in one week.

Teixeira, 33, hit .251/.332/.475 with 24 homers, 84 RBI and 27 doubles in 123 games last season. In his previous three years for the Yankees, he averaged 37 homers and 114 RBI.

The Yankees have been mostly going with Lyle Overbay at first in Teixeira's absence. While Overbay has put together some good power numbers, he's not Teixeira. Overbay enters Friday's action hitting .250/.286/.467 with seven homers and 25 RBI.

That .286 OBP is pretty bad and, given his age and track record -- he hit 11 homers in 510 at-bats in 2011-12 combined -- Overbay is unlikely to continue his power production. So getting Teixeira back will be a boost for the first-place Yankees.
