Coming into the 2013 season, the Pirates had hoped that right-hander Jeff Karstens would be their fifth starter. However, he's been unable to shake the shoulder inflammation that limited him this spring, and now he's been shut down after experiencing additional discomfort following a Friday throwing season, reports Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Karstens had recently made a minor-league rehab appearance.
The 30-year-old Karstens pitched to a 3.97 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 4.40 K/BB ratio in 90 2/3 innings last season. For his career, he owns an ERA+ of 90 across 138 games, 91 of which have been starts. Karstens is under contract for $2.5 million this season.
